What should you know about herpes skin rash?

The skin may feel unusually sensitive, itchy, burning, or painful before blisters become visible. Blisters can sit close together, then rupture and crust. This pattern differs from some forms of eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, or scabies, although visual overlap is common.

The word herpes covers more than one infection, and the body site helps a clinician interpret the rash. Do not assume the cause from the word alone or from a photograph.

Seek prompt assessment, especially while a new blister is present. Gently cleanse the area, pat it dry, wash your hands after contact, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothing, razors, cosmetics, or bedding that touches the lesion. Avoid intimate or close skin contact until you receive clear advice.

Do not start a steroid cream on an undiagnosed blistering rash unless a clinician recommends it. Depending on the findings, an antiviral may be discussed.

Seek urgent care for eye involvement, vision change, severe headache, confusion, marked weakness, breathing difficulty, extensive blistering, or a rapidly worsening rash. Get prompt medical advice if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or experiencing severe pain.

Ask whether the rash needs a swab, which herpes type or alternative diagnosis is being considered, whether treatment is time-sensitive, and how to protect household or intimate contacts. Describe the first symptom and any previous similar episode.
