What should you know about herpes and impetigo?

Short answer

Herpes is caused by a virus, while impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection; their sores can look alike, so an examination may be needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How they differ

Herpes often produces grouped fluid-filled blisters that break into shallow, tender sores. Impetigo commonly causes fragile blisters or red sores followed by yellow-brown crusting, especially around the nose, mouth, or areas that have been scratched. Crusting skin can have several causes, including irritation and eczema such as Atopic Dermatitis, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Avoid touching or squeezing lesions. Both conditions can spread through close skin contact or shared personal items, although the responsible germs are different. Handwashing and separate towels help reduce transmission while the skin is healing.

Practical next steps

Arrange a medical assessment if new blisters, spreading sores, or crusting are developing. A clinician may ask when the rash began, whether it burns or itches, and whether anyone close to you has similar lesions. Treatment depends on the cause: antiviral medicine may be considered for herpes, while selected impetigo cases may need Topical Antibiotic Therapy or Antibiotics For Skin Infection.

Keep the area gently clean and covered with a light dressing if it is draining. Do not share razors, towels, cosmetics, or lip products, and wash clothing or bedding that contacts the sores.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt medical care if sores are near an eye, rapidly spreading, unusually painful, or accompanied by fever, marked tiredness, or difficulty eating or drinking. Urgent assessment is also sensible for a newborn, a person with reduced immunity, or a rash that is not improving after prescribed treatment.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the pattern is more consistent with a viral or bacterial infection, whether a swab is useful, how to protect household contacts, and which warning signs should trigger a same-day review.

Questions people ask

Can herpes and impetigo look similar?

Yes. Both can cause blisters or open sores, and crusting can occur, so a clinician may need to examine the pattern and timing.

Should I use an antibiotic cream on a suspected herpes sore?

Not unless a clinician recommends it. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, and the correct treatment depends on the diagnosis.
