What should you know about hepatitis shot for newborn?

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver. Babies can have few or no early signs, yet infection acquired around birth may persist and cause liver problems later. Vaccination trains the immune system to recognise the virus before exposure. It does not treat an existing infection, and it is different from a liver function test, which checks how the liver is working.

A healthcare professional may review the birth parent's hepatitis B test result and the baby's medical details when planning protection. The vaccine is given by injection, and mild soreness, redness or a short-lived temperature can occur.

Ask the maternity or paediatric team when the dose was given, which product was used and when the next infant doses are due. Keep the vaccination record with the baby's other health documents. Feed the baby as usual unless the treating team gives different advice, and mention any previous reaction to a vaccine or medicine.

Get urgent medical help if the baby has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, becomes unusually floppy or difficult to wake, or develops a seizure after an injection. These reactions need prompt assessment and are not the same as ordinary injection-site soreness.

Contact the baby's clinician for a persistent fever, poor feeding, repeated vomiting, worsening redness or swelling, or any change that concerns you. In older children or adults, dark urine or fatigue can accompany liver illness, but these symptoms do not diagnose hepatitis B by themselves.
