What should you know about a hepatitis C virus test?

An antibody result shows that your immune system has encountered hepatitis C; it does not by itself show whether the virus is currently in your blood. A follow-up virus test can clarify current infection. Recent exposure may need repeat testing because antibodies can take time to appear. Liver blood tests can support assessment but cannot diagnose hepatitis C alone.

Arrange a GP consultation to review the result, timing of exposure, medicines, and other health conditions. Contact a clinician promptly after a reactive result or possible blood exposure. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or sudden marked weakness. Fatigue can occur with liver problems, but severe or worsening fatigue deserves assessment.

Ask which test was performed, whether confirmatory testing is needed, when testing should be repeated after exposure, and whether liver tests or specialist review are appropriate.
