What should you know about hepatitis C RNA PCR?

A detected result supports current hepatitis C infection and should be discussed with a clinician who can arrange assessment and treatment planning. A not-detected result means viral RNA was not found in that sample; your clinician may still consider the timing of exposure, other test results, and liver health before deciding whether any follow-up is needed. An antibody test and an RNA PCR answer different questions: antibodies show that the immune system has encountered the virus, while PCR looks for the virus itself.

Take the report to a GP or liver specialist rather than interpreting one line in isolation. Ask whether liver blood tests, medication review, and further assessment are appropriate. Until you have advice, do not share razors, toothbrushes, or equipment that may have blood on it.
