What should you know about hepatitis C pathology?

An antibody test indicates that your immune system has encountered hepatitis C at some point. It does not by itself prove that virus is still present. A follow-up viral test looks for current infection and helps determine whether treatment should be discussed.

Liver blood tests measure substances released or processed by the liver. Results can suggest irritation or altered function, but they do not provide the whole picture on their own. A clinician may combine them with examination, medical history, and other assessments. Fatigue can occur with hepatitis C but is not specific to it.

Ask the clinician who arranged the test when and how results will be explained. Share your medicines, supplements, alcohol intake, previous hepatitis tests, and any possible blood exposure. If active infection is confirmed, arrange a GP Consultation to discuss antiviral treatment and liver monitoring. A Liver Function Test may be part of that review.

Contact a clinician promptly if results are unclear or you develop jaundice, dark urine, unusual bleeding, persistent vomiting, or abdominal swelling. Go to urgent care for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or fainting. Do not wait for laboratory results if severe symptoms are present.

Ask whether the result is an antibody or viral test, whether active infection is present, what your liver results mean, whether repeat testing is needed, and what treatment or referral comes next.
