Is hepatitis C genetic?

A parent does not pass hepatitis C to a child through DNA in the way a genetic condition is inherited. The virus can pass from a pregnant person to a baby around pregnancy or birth, which is transmission rather than a change in the child’s genes. Blood exposure between household members is also the relevant concern, not family resemblance. A relative’s diagnosis therefore does not automatically mean that every family member has hepatitis C, although shared past exposures may make testing worth discussing.

Tell a GP Consultation about any family diagnosis, pregnancy exposure, shared injecting equipment, unsterile medical or cosmetic procedures, or blood contact. The clinician can decide who should be tested and explain the results. A Liver Function Test may be included to assess the liver, but it does not determine whether the virus was inherited. Do not share razors, toothbrushes, or nail tools that could carry blood.

Arrange assessment after a possible blood exposure, even if there are no symptoms. Seek prompt advice for persistent fatigue, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal swelling, or yellow eyes or skin. Emergency care is needed for vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. These signs require attention regardless of whether hepatitis C is suspected.
