Can hepatitis C spread through kissing?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that mainly spreads when infected blood enters another person’s bloodstream. Sharing items that may carry blood, such as needles or equipment for injecting drugs, creates a more relevant exposure than kissing. The risk from kissing is not expected in everyday situations, but blood in the mouth from sores, bleeding gums, or an injury changes the context and deserves individual advice. Many people have no early symptoms; some develop tiredness, nausea, poor appetite, abdominal discomfort, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Do not panic or stop normal affection solely because of a kiss. Write down whether blood was present, whether either person had mouth injuries, and when the contact occurred. Contact a clinician for persistent fatigue, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal swelling, or yellow skin or eyes. Severe confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, or rapidly worsening illness needs urgent emergency care. These symptoms do not prove hepatitis C, but they should not be ignored.
