What are the early symptoms of hepatitis C?

Short answer
Early hepatitis C often causes no noticeable symptoms, but some people develop fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early presentation
- Many people have no noticeable symptoms
- Possible symptoms
- Fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, or upper-abdominal discomfort
- Confirmation
- Testing is needed because symptoms overlap with other illnesses
Possible early changes
When symptoms occur, they may resemble a mild viral illness: tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, low energy, aching, or a dull discomfort beneath the ribs. Dark urine, pale stools, itching, or yellowing of the eyes and skin can also occur. These signs are not unique to hepatitis C, and many people with the condition have no early warning.
A symptom is not proof of the condition: a person with fatigue may have many different causes, while a person with hepatitis C may feel entirely well. Read about [Hepatitis C](/conditions/hepatitis-c/) and [Fatigue](/symptoms/fatigue/). Testing is needed after a relevant exposure or clinical concern.
How to check the cause
Book a medical assessment if you have possible blood exposure, unexplained symptoms, or a hepatitis C result that needs clarification. The clinician may start with an antibody test and arrange a current-virus test when indicated. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) can review your history, medicines, and symptoms. A [Liver Function Test](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/liver-function-test/) may assess liver health, but it does not replace virus testing. Until assessed, do not share needles, razors, or toothbrushes.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt, non-emergency medical advice for persistent tiredness, appetite loss, nausea, or abdominal discomfort, particularly after a possible exposure. Seek urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, severe vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe swelling of the abdomen, or rapidly worsening illness. These are red flags regardless of their cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which test is appropriate for the timing of a possible exposure, whether liver tests are needed, and how results will be followed up. Ask which medicines or supplements may affect the liver and what warning signs should lead you to urgent care.

Questions people ask
What is the first symptom of hepatitis C?
There is no single first symptom. Many people notice none; others develop non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, or reduced appetite.
Does yellow skin always mean hepatitis C?
No. Jaundice has several possible causes and needs medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.
