What should you know about hepatitis C and the liver?

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that targets liver cells. Some people have no symptoms, while others notice tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite or discomfort under the ribs. Fatigue can have many causes and does not by itself show that hepatitis C is present.

Ongoing inflammation may lead to scarring. The amount of liver change cannot be judged from symptoms alone; blood tests and, when needed, scans or other assessments help clinicians understand liver health.

Arrange a GP Consultation to discuss testing, medicines, alcohol intake, other conditions and any products that could affect the liver. A Liver Function Test can provide information about liver irritation, although a normal result does not answer every hepatitis C question.

Do not share razors, toothbrushes or injecting equipment. Keep appointments even if you feel well, because hepatitis C may be quiet while liver changes develop.

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, fainting, rapidly increasing abdominal swelling or yellow skin with marked illness. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent vomiting, new swelling, unusual bruising or worsening fatigue.

Ask which tests confirm current infection, whether your liver needs further assessment, whether medicines or supplements should be changed, and how follow-up will be arranged.
