What should you know about hepatitis C and lichen planus?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition that may cause itchy, flat-topped bumps or patches, often on the wrists, ankles, lower back, or mouth. Hepatitis C is a viral infection affecting the liver. Some people with lichen planus may be offered hepatitis C testing because the conditions can be associated, but a rash has many possible explanations.

A clinician may examine the skin and mouth, review medicines, and sometimes take a small skin sample. Blood testing is the way to assess hepatitis C; the appearance of lichen planus cannot diagnose it.

Arrange an assessment if new bumps, mouth soreness, nail changes, or persistent itch are affecting daily life. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, since some reactions can resemble lichen planus. Treatment may include a prescribed topical corticosteroid; more extensive disease may need another approach under supervision.

Use fragrance-free moisturiser, avoid scratching, and mention sores in the mouth or genital area because those sites need specific care. If hepatitis C testing is advised, ask how and when results will be explained.

Seek prompt care for painful mouth ulcers that limit drinking, rapidly spreading lesions, eye symptoms, or skin that is blistering or infected. Arrange medical review for yellow eyes, very dark urine, unusual bleeding, or severe abdominal swelling, which can signal a liver problem rather than a skin flare.
