What hepatitis B vaccine is produced from

The vaccine contains a manufactured version of a surface protein associated with hepatitis B. It gives the immune system something specific to recognise, so it can prepare protective antibodies without exposing the person to the complete virus. The protein is made in controlled cell systems and then purified as part of vaccine production.

Because the vaccine does not contain the whole live virus, it cannot create a hepatitis B infection. Different products can contain additional ingredients that help the immune response or keep the preparation stable. The product information and a clinician can answer questions about a particular brand or ingredient.

Tell the vaccinator about a serious reaction to a previous dose or a known ingredient allergy. Ask which product is available, what schedule is planned and how the dose will be recorded. Keep the record, particularly when several clinics or countries are involved in your care.
