Is the hepatitis B vaccine live attenuated?

The hepatitis B vaccine is not live attenuated; it uses a purified surface protein to teach immune recognition. Because it does not contain a live hepatitis B virus, the injection cannot give you hepatitis B.

A live attenuated vaccine contains a weakened form of a living germ. Hepatitis B vaccination works differently: it contains a selected protein from the virus, made for the immune system to recognise. Your body responds to that protein and forms immune memory without being exposed to the complete virus.

This distinction can matter when discussing vaccination with a clinician, especially if you have an immune condition, take immune-suppressing treatment, or are pregnant. Tell the healthcare professional about a previous serious allergic reaction to a vaccine or a known ingredient. Bring your vaccination record and ask which doses are still needed. Arrange medical advice for a worsening injection reaction, persistent fever, or feeling seriously unwell. Dark urine, yellow eyes, and ongoing fatigue should be assessed as possible symptoms of illness rather than interpreted from the vaccine type.
