What should you know about hepatitis B rapid test?

How the structures involved in Hepatitis B differ from normal

Short answer

A hepatitis B rapid test is an initial screening test that may show whether hepatitis B markers are present, but follow-up testing can clarify the result.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test purpose
Initial screening for hepatitis B markers
Sample
Usually a small blood sample
Possible next step
Confirmatory blood testing and liver assessment

What the result means

Rapid tests commonly use a small blood sample and look for a marker linked with hepatitis B infection. A reactive result does not by itself describe how recent the infection is, whether it is active, or how well the liver is working. A non-reactive result may be reassuring, but the clinician may still recommend a different test when exposure was recent, symptoms are present, or vaccination history is unclear. Hepatitis B can occur without obvious symptoms; when symptoms occur, they may include fatigue or dark urine.

What to do next

Ask the testing service which marker was measured and whether a laboratory blood panel is needed. Follow the recommended appointment even if you feel well, because additional tests can distinguish current infection, past infection, and immunity from vaccination. A liver function test may be part of the assessment. Until the result is explained, avoid sharing razors or toothbrushes, cover open cuts, and discuss household or sexual contacts with a clinician.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt medical review for yellowing of the skin or eyes, very dark urine, marked tiredness, vomiting, or pain beneath the right ribs. Seek urgent help if confusion, severe weakness, fainting, or heavy bleeding develops. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a rapid test was reactive or non-reactive.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which confirmatory tests are appropriate, whether your liver needs checking, how to protect people close to you, and whether hepatitis B vaccination is suitable for unprotected household contacts.

Questions people ask

Does a rapid test diagnose every type of hepatitis?

No. A hepatitis B rapid test targets hepatitis B markers and does not replace testing for other hepatitis viruses.

What happens after a reactive result?

A clinician usually explains the marker and arranges laboratory testing to confirm the finding and assess the liver.
