Hepatitis B injection site: what to know

The vaccinator selects an appropriate muscle and checks the skin before injecting. The exact position can vary with age, body size, muscle development, and clinical circumstances. A small area of tenderness, redness, warmth, or swelling may appear around the site and should gradually become more comfortable. Pain in the arm is a local response and does not mean the vaccine has caused hepatitis B.

Keep the area clean and move the arm gently. A cool cloth can ease discomfort. Avoid rubbing or pressing hard on the site, and ask a clinician before taking pain medicine if you have liver disease, allergies, or regular medicines. Keep your vaccination record and report any previous injection-site reaction before the next appointment.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, fainting, or sudden severe weakness. Arrange prompt review if redness spreads quickly, swelling becomes severe, pain worsens, or arm movement is markedly limited. Yellowing, dark urine, or pronounced fatigue needs medical assessment.

Ask where the injection will be given, what local changes are expected, how to care for the arm, and which changes should be reported before the next dose.
