What should you know about hepatitis B injection side effects?

After vaccination, the arm may feel sore, warm or swollen where the needle went in. Some people also feel tired, develop a headache, or have a mild fever or general achiness. These effects can begin after the injection and usually settle without specific treatment. They do not mean that the vaccine has caused hepatitis B.

A reaction can also come from another illness or medicine, so the timing and pattern matter. The vaccine is intended to prevent infection; it does not treat hepatitis B already in the body. Fatigue, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes should not automatically be attributed to the injection and may need medical assessment.

Rest, drink fluids and follow the vaccination clinic's advice. Keep the injection area clean and avoid pressing or scratching it. Before taking a pain or fever medicine, check that it is suitable for you, especially if you have liver disease, allergies, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Record the reaction and tell the clinic before a later dose.

If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with normal activities, contact a healthcare professional. They can examine you and decide whether the symptoms fit a post-vaccination reaction or need another explanation.

Seek emergency help immediately for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, widespread hives, fainting, or sudden severe weakness after the injection. Contact a clinician promptly for a high or persistent fever, rapidly expanding swelling, severe pain, or symptoms that are getting worse. Dark urine or yellow eyes need assessment, particularly with abdominal pain or marked fatigue, because they may signal a liver problem rather than a routine local reaction.

Ask which symptoms are expected with your vaccine, what medicine is suitable for discomfort, whether your reaction changes the next appointment, and whether allergies or immune conditions affect your vaccination plan. If you may have been exposed to hepatitis B, ask whether testing or a Liver Function Test is needed.
