What is a hepatitis B immunity test?

Immunity testing is useful when vaccination history is unclear, after a possible exposure, or when a clinician needs to distinguish protection from infection. The blood panel may show antibodies made after vaccination, antibodies linked with previous infection, or no evidence of protection. Other markers are needed to check for current infection, so an immunity test should be interpreted as part of the full panel.

A person may have hepatitis B without obvious symptoms. Conversely, fatigue or dark urine can arise from many conditions and does not by itself establish hepatitis B. Testing gives a clearer basis for decisions than symptoms alone.

Share any vaccine records and explain the reason for testing. If the result shows no protection, ask whether hepatitis B vaccination is appropriate. If markers suggest exposure or infection, attend the recommended follow-up and ask whether liver function testing is needed. Keep the report for future healthcare visits.
