Hepatitis B viruses can differ in their genetic makeup. A genotype test examines viral material in a blood sample and may help a specialist understand the infection alongside viral activity, liver inflammation, previous treatment and other results. Genotype is not the same as the amount of virus in the blood, the length of infection, or the degree of liver damage. People with the same genotype can have different symptoms and different clinical needs.
