When saliva matters

Hepatitis B is mainly associated with infected blood and certain body fluids entering another person’s body. Kissing, sharing cups, or sharing utensils is not the usual way it spreads. The situation is different when saliva is visibly mixed with blood and reaches a bleeding mouth, an open cut, or another mucous membrane. Bites may also need assessment because they can break the skin. A person can carry hepatitis B without symptoms, so appearance alone cannot establish whether contact was safe.

What to do after contact

Rinse a mouth or wound with water and avoid scrubbing or applying harsh chemicals. Do not share toothbrushes, razors, or items that may carry blood. If blood-containing saliva reached broken skin, eyes, or the mouth, contact a clinician promptly and explain exactly what happened.
