What should you know about the hepatitis B 3-vaccine course?

The vaccine trains your immune system to recognise hepatitis B virus before an exposure occurs. Completing the course matters because the doses work together; a delayed dose does not usually mean the course must be started again, but your clinic should advise you on the next appointment.

Hepatitis B can affect the liver and may spread through contact with infected blood or certain body fluids. Vaccination lowers the chance of infection, but it does not treat hepatitis B that is already present and does not replace precautions around blood or sharps.

The usual course is given as separate injections rather than one combined visit. The schedule can change for infants, people with reduced immune function, those receiving dialysis, or someone who needs protection after a possible exposure. A clinician may also recommend a blood test in selected situations to check whether the immune response is adequate.

Tell the vaccinator about a previous severe allergic reaction to a hepatitis B vaccine or one of its ingredients, current illness, pregnancy, immune-suppressing medicines, and any earlier doses you have received. Bring your vaccination record if it is available.

Soreness, redness, swelling at the injection site, tiredness, headache, or a mild fever can occur for a short time. Rest, drink fluids, and follow the advice given by your clinic. Keep the next appointment in your calendar, and contact the clinic if you are unsure whether a missed dose should be rescheduled.

Seek urgent medical help after vaccination for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting, or severe weakness, as these may signal a serious allergic reaction.

Arrange medical advice for persistent or worsening symptoms, or if you think you may have been exposed to hepatitis B. Possible infection can require prompt assessment, testing, and preventive treatment; vaccination alone is not a substitute for that evaluation. Symptoms such as marked fatigue or dark urine also deserve clinical review because they can have several causes.
