Short answer

Abdominal pain can occur with hepatitis A, but pain alone cannot identify its cause and needs to be considered with other symptoms and examination findings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location and timing can help narrow the cause.
Possible hepatitis A features
Pain may occur with nausea, fever, dark urine, or jaundice.
Self-care
Fluids, gentle meals, and avoiding alcohol may be reasonable while awaiting advice.

How to think about the pain

Hepatitis A can inflame the liver and cause discomfort in the upper right or central abdomen, sometimes alongside tiredness, nausea, reduced appetite, fever, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. A symptom does not establish the diagnosis: abdominal pain has many possible causes, including [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/), [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/), [Gallstones](/conditions/gallstones/), [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/), and [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/).

Pain location, onset, severity, relation to meals, bowel changes, vomiting, fever, and jaundice help guide assessment. Other possibilities include [Coeliac Disease](/conditions/coeliac-disease/), [Crohn's Disease](/conditions/crohns-disease/), or [Diverticular Disease](/conditions/diverticular-disease/).

What to do now

Arrange a medical appointment if pain persists, returns, or occurs with nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine, fever, or unusual tiredness. Record where the pain is, what it feels like, when it began, and whether food or movement changes it. Drink fluids if tolerated, choose gentle meals, avoid alcohol, and check before taking medicines if a liver problem is possible.

When urgent care is needed

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, fainting, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, blood in vomit or stool, confusion, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. Prompt assessment is also needed for pain with high fever or severe weakness. These warning signs can arise from several conditions and should not be attributed to hepatitis A without examination.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pain pattern suggests liver, gallbladder, stomach, bowel, or another source; which examination or blood tests are needed; and whether imaging may help. Mention pregnancy, medicines, alcohol use, recent travel, and any possible food or water exposure.

Questions people ask

No. Abdominal pain has many causes, and diagnosis requires clinical assessment and, when appropriate, blood tests.

Where might hepatitis A discomfort be felt?

It may be felt in the upper right or central abdomen, but location varies and is not diagnostic by itself.
