Hepatic amoebiasis symptoms

Hepatic amoebiasis is a liver infection linked with the parasite that causes amoebiasis. It can produce fever, chills, sweating, tiredness, reduced appetite, and pain or tenderness beneath the right ribs. Some people also have diarrhoea or a recent history of bowel symptoms.

These features overlap with other infections and liver conditions. Symptoms alone cannot confirm hepatic amoebiasis. Recent travel, unsafe food or water, household exposure, and bowel symptoms help a clinician choose appropriate tests.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if you have fever with upper abdominal pain or feel increasingly unwell, particularly after travel or a diarrhoeal illness. Drink fluids if you can and avoid alcohol until the cause is clear.

Diagnosis may involve an examination, blood tests, stool testing, or liver imaging. If confirmed, prescribed antibiotic treatment is used; take it exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. These signs may indicate a serious infection or dehydration.

Contact a clinician promptly for ongoing fever, right-sided abdominal tenderness, worsening diarrhoea, blood in stool, or new yellowing of the eyes or skin. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics.
