What should you know about hennepin technique shoulder reduction?

A dislocated shoulder occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the socket. With the Hennepin approach, a trained clinician supports the patient while the arm is slowly positioned and the shoulder muscles are allowed to relax. The pace is adjusted to discomfort and resistance; forceful pulling is avoided. Assessment and imaging may be needed to check for a fracture, nerve or blood-vessel problem, or a different injury before choosing this method.

Do not try to relocate a shoulder yourself or ask an untrained person to do it. Keep the arm still in the most comfortable position and seek emergency care. After reduction, the clinician may check circulation, sensation, and movement again, then provide support and a recovery plan. Physiotherapy can restore motion and strength gradually, with timing guided by the injury and examination.

A suspected shoulder dislocation needs urgent assessment, especially after a fall, collision, or sudden pull. Call for emergency help if the hand is pale, blue, cold, numb, weak, or difficult to move, or if the shoulder has an obvious deformity with severe pain. After treatment, return promptly for increasing pain, new numbness, fever, or a shoulder that slips out again.
