Hemostan tranexamic acid: what to know

Tranexamic acid slows the breakdown of fibrin, a protein that helps form a blood clot. It may be prescribed for heavy menstrual bleeding or other bleeding situations. It does not correct every cause of bleeding and does not replace assessment when bleeding is new, severe, or unexplained. The correct dose, form, and treatment length depend on why it is being used, kidney function, age, pregnancy status, and other medicines.

Take Hemostan exactly as directed and do not add extra doses because bleeding has not settled. Tell the prescriber about previous blood clots, kidney disease, vision problems, seizures, pregnancy, and hormonal contraception. Share a complete medicine list, including non-prescription products. If you miss a dose, follow the product instructions or ask a pharmacist rather than doubling it. Keep a record of bleeding, pain, and any new symptoms so the treatment can be reviewed.

Get urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, severe headache, weakness on one side, confusion, or a sudden change in vision. Seek prompt assessment if bleeding is heavy, continues despite treatment, occurs during pregnancy, or comes with faintness or severe pelvic pain. Do not use tranexamic acid to delay care for an emergency.
