Short answer

Help with a runny nose starts with identifying whether irritation, allergy, or infection is driving the drainage and then easing the trigger safely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clues
Sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion or facial pressure can help identify the trigger.
First measures
Saline, fluids, rest and avoiding irritants may ease symptoms.

What a runny nose can mean

A runny nose, also called rhinorrhoea, happens when the lining inside the nose produces extra fluid. Clear drainage with sneezing or itchy eyes can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, including reactions to House Dust Mite Allergy or Pet Allergy. Congestion, sore throat, cough, fever or tiredness can accompany a Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19. Facial pressure, reduced smell, thick discharge or symptoms that linger can point towards Sinusitis. Smoke, strong scents, dry air and sudden temperature changes may irritate the nose without an infection.

The appearance of mucus alone cannot identify the cause. Notice when symptoms began, whether they follow a particular place or exposure, and whether you have breathing difficulty or feel systemically unwell.

What you can do today

Drink fluids according to your usual needs and use a saline nasal spray or rinse to loosen and clear mucus. Follow the product instructions and use safe, prepared water for any rinse. Rest if you have a viral illness, wash your hands, and avoid smoke and other known irritants. If allergies seem likely, reducing contact with the suspected trigger and discussing an appropriate antihistamine or nasal treatment with a pharmacist may help. Do not share medicines, and check before using a decongestant if you have other medical conditions or take regular medicines.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if the runny nose is severe, keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, or interferes with sleep, eating or daily activities. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. A clinician can examine the nose and review allergy, infection and sinus symptoms rather than relying on the discharge alone.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern fit an allergy, infection or nasal irritation? Which nasal treatment is suitable with my health conditions and medicines? What symptoms would mean I should return promptly?
