HEINE mini otoscope: what patients can expect

The small format makes the instrument convenient for routine clinical examinations, while its light and viewing system help the clinician look into the ear opening. The examination may show wax, irritated skin, discharge, swelling, a foreign object, or changes to the eardrum. The instrument does not test hearing and cannot decide the cause of a symptom on its own.

Explain whether the problem is pain, blocked hearing, itching, ringing, discharge, or dizziness, and say which ear is affected. Mention recent colds, swimming, pressure changes, surgery, or an injury. Keep still during the brief inspection, especially when a child is being examined. Avoid putting cotton buds, fingers, or drops into the ear unless a clinician has advised them.

Arrange an appointment when ear pain, discharge, reduced hearing, or a blocked sensation continues or keeps returning. Seek urgent advice for sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, bleeding after injury, intense pain with swelling, or redness behind the ear. The severity and timing of symptoms matter more than the particular otoscope model.

Ask whether the canal and eardrum were fully visible, what the findings suggest, whether wax affected the view, and whether you need treatment or a hearing check. Ask what to watch for while symptoms settle.
