What should you know about the HEINE mini 3000 dermatoscope?

Ordinary room lighting may hide subtle pigment structures or small vessels. A dermatoscope places light close to the skin and enlarges the view, helping a trained examiner evaluate a mole, freckle or other lesion. The mini 3000 format is designed for convenient handheld use. It is an aid to examination, not a stand-alone diagnosis, and the appearance of a lesion must be interpreted alongside its history, location and changes over time.

The clinician may inspect one spot or survey several areas, asking when you first noticed a mark and whether it has altered. Remain still while the device is positioned over the skin. Contact examination is generally brief, although the clinician may use a protective interface or fluid depending on the technique. Mention previous skin cancers, many moles, a family history of melanoma, or a lesion that catches on clothing. Ask whether a photograph or follow-up comparison would help.

Book a skin review when a lesion is new and unusual for you, develops uneven colouring or an irregular outline, or changes in a noticeable way. Bleeding without a clear injury, repeated crusting, persistent soreness and a wound that does not heal also warrant assessment. If redness, swelling, drainage or fever develops around a lesion, seek medical care promptly. A compact dermatoscope does not make a concerning change safe to ignore.

Ask what the clinician sees, whether the lesion has reassuring or concerning features, how it should be tracked, and when it should be checked again. If skin cancer screening is suggested, ask whether the examination covers your whole skin or only the area you identified.
