HEINE LED otoscope: how it supports ear checks

An LED otoscope directs light through a small viewing tip so the clinician can examine the ear canal and eardrum. This may help reveal wax, redness, swelling, fluid, discharge, or an object in the canal. Light quality can support visibility, but the device does not interpret the image or determine treatment.

Ear findings are considered with symptoms such as pain, fever, pressure, itch, hearing change, or balance problems. Bring a clear account of when the symptoms started and whether they followed a cold, swimming, travel, or an injury. Mention hearing aids, ear surgery, or a history of eardrum problems. Sit still while the tip is near the ear and tell the clinician about discomfort. Do not use ear candles or place objects in the canal before the appointment.

Seek a routine assessment for ear symptoms that persist, recur, or interfere with hearing or sleep. Obtain urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, significant bleeding, severe pain after injury, or redness and swelling spreading behind the ear. These warning signs need assessment regardless of which examination light is used.

Ask what the LED examination showed, whether the eardrum could be seen fully, whether both ears were affected, and whether you need treatment, hearing assessment, or follow-up. Ask which symptoms would change the urgency.
