Heels for high arched feet: what to know

Short answer
For high-arched feet, choose stable, well-cushioned footwear with a broad heel and enough room for your toes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Look for
- A broad, stable heel and cushioned sole
- Check the fit
- Toes move freely and the heel stays secure
Why heels can feel difficult
A high arch can place more load through the heel and the ball of the foot because the foot may absorb less impact. A narrow or unstable heel can make the ankle work harder and may increase rubbing, pressure or fatigue. High heels also shift body weight forward, so wearing them for long periods may aggravate discomfort. Arch pain can have several causes, including plantar fascia irritation, so footwear alone may not explain every symptom.
Ways to improve comfort
Try a low, broad heel with a firm base, shock-absorbing insole and secure fastening. Check that your toes can move freely and that the heel does not slide. Introduce new shoes gradually and alternate with supportive flat or low-heeled footwear. A clinician can assess your walking pattern and discuss custom orthotics or physiotherapy if symptoms persist. Avoid inserting thick cushioning that crowds the shoe or makes your foot unstable.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for pain that keeps returning, limits walking, causes repeated ankle giving-way, or is accompanied by numbness, marked swelling or a change in foot shape. Seek prompt care after a significant injury or when you cannot put weight on the foot.
Questions for your doctor
Could my footwear be concentrating pressure in a particular part of my foot? Would an examination of my gait help? Are custom orthotics or physiotherapy suitable for my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Are high heels always unsuitable for high arches?
Not necessarily, but a high, narrow or unstable heel can increase forefoot pressure and reduce balance. Shorter wear time and a stable design may be more comfortable.
Can inserts help?
An insert may improve cushioning or distribute pressure, but it should fit the shoe without crowding the foot. Persistent pain deserves a clinical assessment.
