What should you know about heavy eye bags?

Puffiness may be more noticeable after poor sleep, salty meals, allergies, crying, or rubbing the eyes. In other people, the main feature is a fold of loose upper or lower eyelid skin, known as droopy eyelids. A hollow beneath the eye can create a dark or tired-looking shadow even without much swelling. Bags can also reflect the normal position of fat around the eye changing over time. One person may have several of these features together.

The appearance alone cannot identify a single condition. Compare both sides and notice whether the change is longstanding, fluctuates, or appeared suddenly.

Avoid rubbing the area, protect facial skin from sunlight, and consider whether an allergy or irritating eye product is causing congestion. A cool compress may temporarily ease puffiness. If the concern is persistent, a dermatologist or qualified eye specialist can assess skin laxity, fat prominence, fluid retention, and hollowing. Options may include under-eye filler for selected hollows or eyelid surgery when excess skin or fat is the main issue; these are different procedures with different risks and suitability.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if swelling is sudden, strongly one-sided, painful, red, associated with fever, or accompanied by blurred vision, double vision, eye movement pain, or facial swelling. Seek urgent help for sudden vision loss or severe eye pain. Otherwise, book a routine review if the bags persist, affect vision, or concern you about a changing eyelid.
