Heat stroke symptoms and shaking: what to know

Shaking can reflect the body’s response to changing temperature, dehydration, exhaustion, infection, low blood sugar, or a seizure. It is not enough by itself to diagnose heat stroke. Heat stroke becomes more urgent when shaking occurs with confusion, fainting, trouble walking, severe headache, vomiting, a rapid heartbeat, or difficulty waking. Fever can also cause chills and shaking, so the surrounding circumstances and mental state matter.

Move the person away from heat and begin gentle cooling with a cool wet cloth, airflow, or a cool shower when safe. Call emergency services for altered alertness, collapse, seizure, or severe overheating. Do not restrain seizure movements or place anything in the mouth. Do not give fluids to someone who is confused, vomiting, or unable to swallow. Medical teams can assess hydration and may provide IV Fluid Therapy.

Get urgent help if shaking is accompanied by confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink. Seek prompt medical advice when shaking continues after leaving the heat, returns repeatedly, or is paired with a Fever. Heat Exhaustion can also require assessment when symptoms do not settle with rest and cooling.

Describe when the shaking began, whether you remained alert, how long it lasted, and any medicines or illnesses that may affect temperature control. Ask what warning signs to watch for.
