Heat stroke symptoms and diarrhea: what to know

Diarrhea can cause dehydration and may occur alongside heat exhaustion, stomach infection, or another illness. Heat stroke is more concerning when diarrhea is accompanied by confusion, fainting, seizure, inability to drink, very hot skin, severe weakness, or a marked change in behaviour. Vomiting can further limit hydration. Diarrhea by itself does not establish heat stroke, and a Fever may reflect infection rather than overheating.

Move the person out of heat, loosen excess clothing, and start cooling with wet cloths and moving air. Arrange emergency help immediately if there is confusion, collapse, seizure, or inability to swallow. If fully alert and not vomiting, offer small frequent sips of an oral rehydration drink. Avoid forcing fluids. Medical staff may assess dehydration and provide IV Fluid Therapy when drinking is unsafe or insufficient.

Seek emergency care for altered alertness, fainting, seizure, severe dizziness, very hot skin, little urine, blood in stool, or repeated vomiting. Heat-related illness can deteriorate quickly, especially when diarrhea prevents fluid replacement. If symptoms began after heat exposure but the person remains alert, prompt medical advice is still appropriate.

Ask whether the pattern suggests heat illness, infection, or both; which fluids are suitable; how to monitor urine and alertness; and when normal activity can resume.
