What should you know about heat stroke skin rash?

A heat rash is often made of small red or prickly bumps in areas covered by clothing or where skin touches skin. It develops when sweat ducts become blocked. Heat stroke is different: it affects the whole body and may cause hot skin, headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea, confusion, fainting, or poor coordination. A rash alone does not diagnose heat stroke, and heat stroke may occur without any rash. Fever can have causes unrelated to hot weather, so the surrounding symptoms and exposure matter.

Move out of the heat, loosen clothing, wash or dab the skin with cool water, and use gentle airflow. Keep the area dry and avoid heavy creams that trap heat. If the person is alert, offer small sips of fluid. Do not delay emergency help if they are confused, faint, vomiting, having a seizure, or struggling to breathe. Cooling should begin while emergency services are being contacted.

Call emergency services for a rash combined with altered mental status, collapse, very hot skin, severe weakness, or worsening symptoms after heat exposure. Seek clinical advice if the rash spreads, becomes painful, develops blisters, or does not settle after cooling. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from an allergic reaction, infection, or another skin problem and check for dehydration or organ stress.
