Can Heat Stroke Cause Permanent Damage?

Extreme overheating can disturb brain function and place strain on the kidneys, liver, muscles, heart and blood-clotting system. The risk depends on factors such as how high the body temperature became, how long overheating continued, other illnesses and how quickly cooling began. Symptoms may improve before all effects are clear, which is why clinicians may arrange repeat examinations or blood tests. Persistent confusion, weakness, poor coordination or reduced urine needs review.

Follow the treating team’s plan for observation, fluids, medicines and repeat tests. Rest in a cool setting, avoid strenuous activity and avoid returning to intense heat until a clinician says it is appropriate. Do not use alcohol or self-prescribed medicines to manage ongoing symptoms. Keep a record of changes in memory, balance, speech, strength, urine or muscle pain so they can be reported clearly.

Return for urgent care if confusion returns, the person becomes difficult to wake, has a seizure, develops chest pain, breathing trouble, severe muscle pain, very dark urine, repeated vomiting or markedly reduced urination. A new fever-like feeling after heat illness should not be dismissed. Emergency symptoms warrant immediate help rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.

Ask which organs were affected, whether follow-up blood or urine tests are needed, which symptoms should prompt urgent review, and how to resume work, exercise and heat exposure safely.
