How Long Does Heat Stroke Last?

The course depends on how high the body temperature became, how long overheating continued, the person’s health, and how quickly cooling and medical treatment began. Headache, weakness, nausea, poor concentration, or tiredness can remain after the immediate crisis improves. A person may look better while still needing observation because heat injury can affect the brain, kidneys, muscles, and other organs. Heat exhaustion generally has a different course; compare it with Heat Exhaustion without assuming the two conditions are interchangeable.

Treat suspected heat stroke as an emergency from the start. Call for help, move the person into a cool environment, remove extra clothing, wet the skin, and fan it. Do not let temporary improvement end the assessment. Follow the treating clinician’s advice about fluids, rest, medicines, tests, and returning to heat or exercise. IV Fluid Therapy may be considered by a medical team when dehydration or swallowing difficulty makes drinking unsafe.

Seek urgent reassessment for continuing confusion, fainting, seizure, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, worsening headache, very dark urine, severe muscle pain, or inability to drink safely. A Fever can have causes other than heat exposure, so persistent temperature elevation needs clinical evaluation rather than home monitoring alone. Do not drive an affected person if they are confused or faint.

Ask which symptoms are expected during recovery, what follow-up is needed, when work or exercise can restart, and which changes should prompt an immediate return for care.
