Heat stroke effects on the brain

The brain is especially sensitive to overheating. A person may become confused, unusually sleepy, agitated, unsteady, faint, or unable to answer simple questions. Seizures or loss of consciousness can occur. A very hot body, headache, nausea, or vomiting may accompany these changes, but the absence of sweating does not rule heat stroke in or out. Heat exhaustion is a different, less severe heat illness, although it can worsen if cooling and hydration do not help.

Call emergency services as soon as heat stroke is suspected. Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned area, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, cool water, or fanning. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, vomiting, having a seizure, or not fully awake. Place an unconscious person on their side, keep watching their breathing, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Hospital teams may use rapid cooling and IV Fluid Therapy while checking the brain and other organs.

Confusion, collapse, seizure, severe weakness, unusual behaviour, or difficulty staying awake after heat exposure needs emergency assessment immediately. Do not wait for a thermometer reading or for symptoms to settle. Persistent vomiting, a severe headache, or a high temperature with altered thinking also warrants urgent help. A person who improves after cooling should still be assessed if any mental change occurred.

Ask which brain symptoms require observation after discharge, whether medicines or health conditions raise heat risk, and how to plan a safer return to work, sport, or outdoor activity. Ask what fluids are suitable if nausea or vomiting continues.
