What should you know about heat stroke day after sun exposure?

Heat stroke can follow prolonged sun or heat exposure, strenuous activity, or dehydration. A person may feel weak, dizzy, nauseated, confused, or unusually sleepy after leaving the heat. Headache, vomiting, a high body temperature, and fainting are concerning. Heat exhaustion can also follow sun exposure, but altered thinking, collapse, or seizure raises the urgency.

The next-day timing does not prove that sun exposure caused the illness. Fever, infection, medication effects, and other causes can look similar, so a clinician should assess persistent or worsening symptoms rather than relying on a home label.

Rest in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place. Remove excess clothing and use cool wet cloths, a fan, or cool water on the skin. If fully alert, take small sips of fluid and avoid alcohol, intense exercise, and further sun exposure. Record when the exposure occurred, when symptoms began, and whether vomiting or reduced urination developed.

Do not force drinks if the person is drowsy, confused, vomiting, or unable to swallow safely. Cooling is first aid, not a complete treatment. A healthcare professional may recommend monitoring, blood tests, or IV Fluid Therapy depending on hydration and organ function.

Ask whether the pattern fits heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, or another illness; whether your temperature and organ function need checking; and when it is safe to resume exercise, work, or direct sun exposure. Mention all medicines and the full duration of symptoms.
