Can heat stroke cause chills?

Shivering is a heat-producing response, but during heat stroke the body's control system is no longer regulating temperature normally. A person may report feeling cold, develop goosebumps, or shake despite recent sun or exertion. The skin may be sweaty, dry, hot, or difficult to judge by touch. Confusion, slurred speech, poor coordination, fainting, seizure, and extreme weakness are more urgent clues than chills alone. Heat exhaustion can also cause shivering as fluid and salt losses build. Infection can cause chills too, so the surrounding circumstances and the person's alertness need consideration.

Move the person away from heat, remove extra layers, and cool the body using wet cloths, cool water, and moving air. Call emergency services when heat stroke is suspected. Do not wrap the person in blankets because they are shivering. Keep observing breathing and responsiveness. If fully alert, they may take small sips; do not give food or drink to anyone confused, vomiting repeatedly, seizing, or unconscious. A medical team can assess hydration and provide IV Fluid Therapy when needed.

Seek emergency care for chills after intense heat exposure when there is confusion, collapse, seizure, severe headache, breathing difficulty, or inability to drink. Get prompt medical review if shivering continues despite cooling, weakness worsens, or urine becomes very scant. Chills should not reassure you that the person only has a minor illness; dangerous overheating can coexist with a cold sensation.

Ask whether the episode fits heat illness, infection, or another cause; how to cool safely; what fluids are suitable; and which symptoms require another emergency visit. Record the setting, activity, clothing, time in the heat, shivering pattern, temperature if measured, and changes in alertness.
