Can heat stroke cause vomiting?

During severe heat illness, changes in circulation and stress on the nervous system can cause nausea or vomiting. Fluid and salt losses from sweating may make these symptoms worse. Vomiting can also prevent a person from drinking, allowing dehydration to progress. Heat stroke is more than feeling overheated: confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, or unusual behaviour are danger signs. Heat exhaustion may cause nausea and fatigue without the same severe neurological changes, but it can worsen if the person remains in the heat. Vomiting alone does not identify the cause.

Move the person into a cool place, remove unnecessary clothing, and cool them with wet cloths, cool water, and airflow. Contact emergency services if heat stroke is suspected. Keep the person on their side if vomiting or drowsy, and watch their breathing. Give small sips only when they are fully awake and swallowing safely. Never force a drink or place anything in the mouth of someone confused, seizing, or unconscious. Clinicians may use IV Fluid Therapy when oral fluids are unsafe or insufficient.

Get emergency help for vomiting with confusion, collapse, seizure, severe overheating, trouble breathing, or inability to stay awake. Repeated vomiting, faintness when standing, very little urine, blood in vomit, or worsening weakness also needs urgent assessment. Do not delay while trying different drinks or medicines; cooling and professional evaluation are priorities when heat stroke is possible.

Ask what may be causing the vomiting, when oral fluids are safe, whether any medicine could worsen dehydration, and how to recognise recurrence. Describe the heat exposure, timing of vomiting, fluids attempted, urine output, and any confusion or fainting.
