Can heat stroke cause diarrhea?

Severe heat exposure can disturb the digestive system as the body redirects blood flow toward the skin and struggles to regulate temperature. Fluid loss through loose stools adds to dehydration, especially when sweating has already reduced the body's reserves. Heat stroke is a medical emergency involving very high body temperature and changes such as confusion, fainting, seizures, unusual behaviour, or extreme weakness. Diarrhea may occur alongside these signs, but it may instead reflect infection, food-related illness, or another digestive problem. Heat exhaustion is a related but less severe heat illness; symptoms can worsen if cooling and rehydration are delayed.

Move the person to shade or an air-conditioned place, remove excess clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, fanning, or cool water. Call emergency services if heat stroke is suspected. Do not leave the person alone. If they are fully awake and able to swallow, offer small sips of a suitable drink; never force fluids or give anything by mouth to someone who is confused, drowsy, vomiting repeatedly, or unconscious. Medical teams may assess dehydration and consider IV Fluid Therapy.

Seek emergency help immediately for confusion, collapse, seizure, severe weakness, trouble breathing, hot skin, or inability to drink. Bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, very little urine, or worsening dizziness also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for diarrhea to stop before seeking help: the combination of heat exposure and altered mental status is especially concerning. A clinician can check temperature, circulation, hydration, and possible causes.

Ask what caused the diarrhea, how to replace lost fluids safely, whether medicines should be paused, and which warning signs should bring you back for review. Tell the clinician when heat exposure began, how often stools occurred, what was taken to drink, and whether confusion, fainting, fever, or vomiting developed.
