Heat Stroke and Body Aches: What to Know

Hard work in heat can fatigue muscles, while sweating removes fluid and salts. This may cause aching, cramps, weakness, or muscle tightness. Body aches are a presentation of heat illness, but they are not specific to heat stroke; infection, overexertion, and other problems can also cause them. Heat exhaustion may produce muscle symptoms before more serious neurological changes appear.

Stop exertion and move to a cool place. Loosen clothing, wet the skin, and use a fan. Rest the affected muscles without forcing stretches or massage. If the person is fully alert and not vomiting, small sips of a suitable drink may be tolerated; do not give anything by mouth to someone confused or unable to swallow. Call emergency services for confusion, fainting, seizure, very hot skin, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, dark urine, or worsening muscle pain after heat exposure.
