Heat Stroke: Does Temperature Matter?

Body temperature can vary with the thermometer, measurement site, recent cooling, and timing. Heat stroke is judged from the whole picture: heat exposure, very hot body, nervous-system changes, collapse, seizure, or severe weakness. A fever can also raise temperature, but infection and heat illness are managed differently. Heat exhaustion may cause heavy sweating and weakness without the same degree of neurological change.

Move the person out of the heat, remove extra clothing, wet the skin, and fan continuously. Use cool packs near the neck, armpits, and groin if available, with a cloth barrier. Check breathing and keep the person on their side if vomiting or not fully alert. Call emergency services rather than waiting for a repeat temperature. Hospital teams may use IV Fluid Therapy and monitor organs and salts.

Seek emergency care immediately for confusion, unusual behaviour, fainting, seizure, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink after heat exposure. A lower reading after cooling does not erase the need for assessment if the person had altered awareness or collapsed. Keep observing them until professionals take over.

Ask how the temperature was measured, whether tests are needed for kidney function or electrolytes, and which symptoms should trigger another emergency visit. Review medicines or illnesses that may reduce heat tolerance.
