What should you know about heat stroke and seizures?

Heat stroke can disrupt brain function and may trigger a seizure. The person may stiffen, jerk, lose awareness, or be confused afterward. A seizure can also have other causes, including illness, medication effects, or low blood sugar, so do not assume heat is the only explanation. Fever and overheating can look similar from a distance; focus on immediate safety and tell clinicians exactly what you observed. A person recovering from heat exhaustion can deteriorate, especially if mental status changes.

Clear nearby objects, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing, and turn the person onto their side when possible. Do not restrain movements, put anything in the mouth, or give food, drink, or tablets. Once movements stop, remove excess clothing and cool the skin with wet cloths, cool water, and airflow. Check breathing and stay with the person. If breathing is absent after the seizure, follow emergency dispatcher instructions. Do not postpone the call to measure temperature.

Call emergency services immediately for any seizure with suspected heat stroke, a seizure that continues, repeated seizures, breathing difficulty, serious injury, or failure to regain awareness. Even if the movements stop quickly, heat stroke requires urgent medical assessment. Note the start and end of the seizure, responsiveness, breathing, exposure to heat, and any vomiting for the emergency team.

Ask whether the episode needs neurological or metabolic testing, which medicines could affect seizure risk, how to prevent heat exposure, and what a future seizure action plan should include. Share a witness account rather than trying to label the event yourself.
