Heat-related hives: what you should know

The bumps may be small and numerous or merge into larger patches. They commonly begin on the chest, neck, arms, or face soon after heat exposure. Hives can fade in one area while appearing elsewhere. Hives are a common presentation of urticaria; heat is one possible trigger, but infection, medicines, pressure, or other stimuli can also contribute.

Swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, or feet may occur alongside welts. This deeper swelling is called angioedema and needs closer attention, particularly if it affects the mouth or throat.

Move to a cooler place, loosen tight clothing, and use a cool—not icy—compress. Sip fluids and avoid hot showers, vigorous exercise, alcohol, and anything you know brings on the rash until it settles.

Do not scratch; gently pat the skin and choose loose, breathable clothing. A pharmacist or clinician may discuss an oral antihistamine treatment. Keep a note of heat, activity, foods, medicines, and timing so a clinician can identify patterns.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or throat. These symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction, even when the skin findings seem limited.

Arrange medical review when episodes keep returning, last beyond the expected short period, disturb sleep, or are accompanied by fever, bruising, pain, or skin changes that remain in one spot.

Ask whether the pattern fits heat-triggered urticaria, which medicines are suitable for you, and whether another condition should be considered. Mention any facial swelling, new medicines, recent illness, and activities that preceded each episode.
