Heat rash under the stomach: what to know

Short answer
Heat rash under the stomach can occur when a warm abdominal fold traps sweat and friction, leading to prickling, itching, bumps or redness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening
A lower abdominal fold may have limited airflow, especially after sweating or when clothing presses against it. Moisture softens the outer skin and movement can increase rubbing, producing a prickly or burning sensation and a patch of small bumps. Heat Rash, also known as miliaria or prickly heat, is one possible explanation.
The same area can develop irritant dermatitis, eczema or a fold infection. Skin Rash, Skin Redness and Skin Bumps describe common features but cannot establish the cause. Pay attention to scaling, cracks, wetness, odour, pain and whether the change follows a new soap, fabric or activity.
Practical care
After washing, dry the fold carefully by patting; a cool fan or a clean dry cloth can help without vigorous rubbing. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change it after sweating. Keep the fold separated from damp skin with a clean, dry fabric layer, replacing it when wet. Avoid scratching and avoid scented lotions, harsh antiseptics, talc-heavy powders and home acids.
A suitable emollient can help protect intact skin from friction; see Emollient Therapy. Do not use steroid creams casually in a fold or over broken, moist skin. If prescribed, Topical Corticosteroids should be used exactly as directed because the product and duration matter.
When to arrange an assessment
Seek medical advice when the rash persists despite reducing heat and moisture, returns repeatedly, or becomes sore, warm, cracked, wet or foul-smelling. Get prompt help for fever, rapidly advancing redness, substantial swelling or feeling unwell. Examination is especially useful when the fold is broken down or the cause is unclear.
Questions to bring
Could moisture, friction, a product or an infection be driving this rash? How should I dry and protect the fold? Is an emollient suitable? Which symptoms mean I should stop self-care and return for review?

Questions people ask
Can tight clothing cause heat rash under the stomach?
Tight or non-breathable clothing can hold heat and increase friction, which may aggravate a fold rash. Looser, breathable clothing can reduce those triggers.
Should I cover the rash under my stomach?
A clean, dry, breathable layer may limit skin-to-skin rubbing, but avoid sealing a wet or infected-looking rash under an occlusive covering.
