What should you know about heat rash symptoms?

Most people with heat rash notice irritation where sweat has been trapped near the surface of the skin. The area may tingle, sting, itch or feel tender. It can show as fine red or skin-coloured bumps, a patch of redness, or small clear blisters. Common sites include the neck, chest, back, groin, armpits and skin folds, although any covered or overheated area can be affected.

Symptoms can overlap with other skin bumps, rashes and causes of redness. The timing, body location and response to cooling help a clinician assess the pattern, but a photograph or label alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Cool the body, pause strenuous activity and change damp clothing. Use loose breathable fabrics and keep affected folds dry. A cool damp cloth can reduce prickling; pat the skin dry rather than rubbing. Avoid scratching, oily products and fragranced preparations. If symptoms continue, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether emollient therapy or a topical corticosteroid is suitable for the specific site.

Arrange medical advice when symptoms persist after cooling, recur often or interfere with sleep and daily activity. Prompt care is needed for fever, pus, yellow crusting, increasing warmth, swelling or severe pain. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness or widespread blistering.
