What should you know about heat rash sores?

Short answer
Heat rash sores are irritated or blistered areas caused by trapped sweat, and cooling the skin helps it settle.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Heat, sweating and blocked sweat ducts
- Helpful first step
- Cool, dry skin and reduce friction

- Pus, fever, spreading warmth or severe pain
What sores can mean
Heat rash, also called prickly heat or sweat rash, develops when sweat cannot reach the skin surface easily. The area may feel prickly, itchy, raw or sore. Small clear blisters can occur, while deeper irritation may produce red bumps. Friction from tight clothing, skin folds, helmets or dressings can add to the discomfort. Heat rash is different from an infected wound, but broken skin can become infected if it is scratched.
The appearance can overlap with other causes of skin bumps, rash or redness. Note where the sores began, whether they followed sweating, and whether there is drainage, crusting or increasing tenderness.
Ways to calm the skin
Move to a cooler space and let the skin dry. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid heavy creams, oily ointments, fragranced products and vigorous rubbing over the affected area. A cool damp cloth may ease the sting; pat rather than scrub afterward. Keep folds gently clean and dry, and try not to scratch. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an emollient or a short course of a topical corticosteroid fits the location and appearance.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if sores spread despite cooling, keep returning, or do not begin improving after the heat and sweating stop. Seek prompt care for pus, yellow crusting, worsening warmth, marked swelling, fever, severe pain, or red streaking. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, faintness or widespread blistering.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits heat rash, whether any broken areas need infection care, and which product is suitable for the body site. Mention new medicines, recent exercise, occlusive clothing and any fever.

Questions people ask
Can heat rash form blisters?
Yes. Some forms cause tiny clear blisters or irritated bumps, especially after sweating and skin occlusion.
Should sores be covered?
Avoid tight, non-breathable coverings unless a clinician advises one; clean, dry and protected skin usually tolerates gentle airflow better.
