Heat rash on the buttocks in adults: what to know

Adult buttock skin may stay warm beneath close clothing, sportswear or protective equipment. Sitting for long periods and repeated rubbing can add irritation. Heat rash may be itchy, sting, or show as small red bumps and fine blisters. Folliculitis, contact dermatitis, fungal infection and pressure-related skin damage can resemble it. A rash that is deep, one-sided, sharply painful or draining deserves a closer look rather than repeated self-treatment.

After sweating, change clothing and rinse the area gently. Pat dry, use breathable fabrics and reduce friction from tight seams. Avoid fragranced products, aggressive scrubbing and scratching. Keep the area cool and dry, while protecting any chafed skin from further rubbing. If symptoms are persistent or the diagnosis is unclear, a clinician can recommend an appropriate moisturiser or medicine after examining the rash.

Arrange a review when the rash does not settle after sensible cooling and moisture control, or when it becomes painful, hot, swollen, crusted or wet. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe tenderness, or a growing lump near the anus. Adults with diabetes, immune suppression or poor circulation should seek advice sooner when skin is broken or infection is suspected.
