Heat rash on the neck: treatment

The neck can stay warm beneath collars, scarves, hair, helmets, or protective equipment. Sweat and rubbing may block ducts and cause miliaria, with prickling, small bumps, or skin redness. Hair products, fragrance, jewellery, and detergent residue can also irritate this area. A neck skin rash is not automatically heat rash; infection, allergy, eczema, and other problems can resemble it. The pattern and its response to cooling help guide an assessment.

Remove tight collars and keep the neck shaded and cool. Wash with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Keep hair and hair products off the affected skin while it settles. Use a clean cool cloth briefly and choose breathable clothing. Avoid necklaces, perfumes, oils, scrubs, and scratching. Have the rash assessed if it spreads, becomes painful or hot, develops blisters, crusting, or pus, or comes with fever. Seek urgent help for swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, or sudden widespread symptoms. Ask whether a collar, hair product, fragrance, or medicine may be contributing. Confirm which cleanser or moisturiser suits the area, whether steroid treatment is needed, and how to protect the neck in hot weather.
