Heat rash on the lips: what to know

Classic heat rash usually affects sweat-prone skin, while the lips have a different structure and are exposed to saliva, food, cosmetics, toothpaste, sun, and wind. Tiny bumps or redness around the mouth may therefore reflect contact irritation, chapped skin, cold sores, acne-like inflammation, or another condition. Heat and sweating can still irritate the surrounding skin, particularly under a mask.

Note whether the change is on the lip surface, at the corners, or on nearby skin. Burning, grouped blisters, crusting, or a new product exposure can provide useful clues. Do not squeeze bumps or share lip products while the cause is unclear.

Cool the surrounding skin with a clean damp cloth and rinse away sweat. Stop new lip balms, cosmetics, fragranced products, and harsh cleansers until the area settles. Use a bland protective ointment on chapped external skin if it does not sting, and avoid licking or peeling the lips. Keep the area clean without scrubbing.

Arrange prompt medical advice for painful blisters, spreading crusts, pus, recurrent episodes, or symptoms that do not settle after removing irritants.
